A little background.

We have no specific record of when football commenced in the village, but some indication from old photographs suggests around 1920. At that time the Football club was a section on its own and had no ties with the cricket section. Early games were played on the site of Captain Cooks Way housing estate, Tree Bridge in Nunthorpe village,  and in the Halls fields in Great Ayton.

Around 1930 football was played at Leven Park where the present football pitch is situated. Records show the football teams played in the local leagues South & District Bank League, Stokesley League, Cleveland League, Eskvale & Cleveland League and the Teesside League. At various times between 1930 and the present date numerous league titles and cup competitions have been won. In 2011 the club won the prestigious North Riding Saturday Challenge Cup we also reached the final of the North Riding  Saturday County Cup, 2013.

In the 1980’s, the Football Club and the Cricket Club amalgamated to re-name to Great Ayton Cricket & Football Club. Around this time junior cricket and football teams were introduced into the club, and during the last two decades, the club has become one of the strongest local sports club in the area.

Presently the club supports one senior football team Great Ayton United. Players come from the village and the surrounding villages. In recent seasons the benefits of having a junior football section with under 18 team players given a chance to play in the senior teams. Season 2015 / 16 was a glorious season for the club, Eskvale & Cleveland league champions, Knockout cup winners, Eileen Hodgson cup winners and runners-up in the Whitby Benevolent cup
